Hoedspruit Wildlife Estate

ALL YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT THE HOEDSPRUIT WILDLIFE ESTATE

Location & Layout

The estate is situated to the eastern side of Hoedspruit town just off the R 40, behind the Rock Fig lifestyle centre and within walking distance to the local shopping centre and Time Square business park. To the east of the estate lies the Hoedspruit Air Force Base, to the west the town of Hoedspruit, to the North lies Pridelands Game Reserve and to the South the game farm Welverdiend.

The estate is 700 ha in size with 490 properties of 5 000 sqm each. Only half of the estates land surface has been developed for housing whilst the remainder is kept undeveloped and referred to as green-belt.

History of the Hoedspruit Wildlife Estate

The development started out targeting the second home market, owning a holiday home was made attractive through relaxed rules about renting out your property to other holiday makers.

Short term rentals are allowed and many of the lodge type properties are either owner run holiday homes or are being serviced by local letting agencies such as Afrika Wildlife Homes.

No special levies have been set by the Home Owners Association for any commercial use (Airbnb etc) but owners need to apply for the relevant zoning permit from the local authorities. The rezoning from residential to commercial use will affect the monthly rates and taxes to be paid to the municipality.

Wildlife

Wildlife found on estate consists of
  • giraffe
  • zebra
  • warthog
  • wildebeest
  • impala
  • duiker
  • bushbuck
  • waterbuck
  • kudu
to name some of the bigger species.

As the estate borders on to game farms on 2 sides, occasionally predators are spotted roaming on the Hoedspruit Wildlife Estate.
These animal’s movements are carefully monitored through night-vision cameras along the fence line, patrols and helicopter surveillance. Predators which have been reported are leopard and wild dogs.

Pet Policy

Home owners are allowed to keep no more than 2 dogs per household. Home owners need to ensure that their dogs are kept within an enclosed area on the premises and that the property is fenced. The dogs need to be registered with the home owners association, wear a name tag and inoculations need to be kept up to date. Dogs need to be well trained and owners need to ensure that they do not become a nuisance for others living on the estate. When taking the dog/s for a walk, they need to be kept on a leash at all times.

Things to do

The estate has within its borders the African Dream Horse Safari stables and guided horse trails can be booked directly with African Dream Horse Safaris. Pre-booking is advised to avoid disappointment.

Game drives

Self-driven or booked drives are possible on all the gravel and tar roads with exception of the perimeter patrol roads along the fence line.
For game drives in the neigbouring Big 4 & Big 5 game reserves, such as Pridelands and including The Kruger National Park, we recommend The Other Animals Safari, a safari operator who will pick you up from your lodge within the Hoedspruit Wildlife Estate.

Cycling

There are some exciting single track cycling routes in the estate which take you through the dry river system and to the bird hides in the Hoedspruit Wildlife Estate. Bring your own bikes or rent from some of the lodges in the estate which hire out bicycles (such hire is subject to availability and lodge guests will be given preference over outside guests).

Walks & Bird watching

Head to the so called green belt of the estate, reserved for the wildlife and for leisure activities. The area is undeveloped and was set aside for the enjoyment of wildlife. It features 3 dams, with elevated bird hides and a number of well-marked game drive routes which are all gravel roads as well as single track cycling routes and walking trails.
